What is AHA Peel?
AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) are the acids refined from natural substances often called fruit acids. They include glycolic acid from sugar cane, lactic acid from sour milk and tartaric acid from fermented grapes etc. Glycolic acid is most frequently & effectively used for superficial peels because the particles are very small which results in high penetration into the skin. The goal of AHA peel is to peel off the dead skin in order to stimulate normal healing and skin rejuvenation.
What is the use of AHA peel?
- Removing the outer layers of damaged skin and stimulate the production of new skin cells from beneath; smoothens the texture of the skin
- Stimulating the growth of new tissue in which elastic fibers are more plentiful and better organized.
- Diminishes pigmentation
- Treatment of acne (pimples) especially those with blackheads and whiteheads
How is AHA peel performed?
The treatment begins with thorough cleansing of the skin before the acid is applied. The length of time which the acid is left on the skin depends on the skin problems, strength of the acid and the reaction of your skin to the acid. During the peel, most patients experience mild burning or stinging sensation for a few minutes until the acid is neutralized. After an AHA peel, it is common to experience temporary stinging, flaking, redness, itchiness and dryness of the skin for few hours. An ice pack may be used to sooth the skin, and in rare cases, to reduce swelling. The skin may begin to visibly peel and you may notice mild crusting on the second day. Avoid removing the skin yourself as this will only prolong the final healing process. The process may last for 5-7 days.
After care
- Cleanse the skin with mild cleanser, pad dry with a soft towel (avoid rubbing and scratching the skin) and apply moisturizers and makeup.
- Avoid the use of active products (Vitamin C, glycolic acid, Kinerase or Retin A) while you are peeling.
- Completely avoid sun exposure while you are peeling. Always apply a wide spectrum (with UVA and UVB protection) sunblock of at least SPF30 because new skin is very sensitive and susceptible to injury.
Can it be combined with microdermabrasion?
It can be used in conjunction with other procedures such as skin rejuvenation laser and microdermabrasion in order to achieve better results.
How long does each treatment take and how many treatments will I need?
Each treatment takes 15-20 minutes. The number of treatments depends on the severity of the skin problem the patient has. We recommend 8 sessions in one to two week intervals followed by monthly treatments for maintenance.
What are the complications of AHA peel?
AHA peel is generally considered as a safe procedure. Possible complications such as persistent redness, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, skin infection, scarring and the reactivation of cold sores / herpes simplex infection are rarely seen. |
